Larry Kessler

Larry Kessler spent a good part of the last twelve years in Hawaii studying the Hawaiian traditions. In 1996, he was made an alakai (teacher) of Huna by his kupua Kiaina'auaomaikalani, who initiated him into a lineage of kahuna that extends back twenty generations from Daddy Bray to before Kamehameha. After that, he spent another nine years working with other teachers and healers. After his immersion in the Hawaiian system, he studied Core Shamanism through the Foundation of Shamanic Studies and graduated from Michael Harner's three-year program. What he learned there allowed him to penetrate deeper in to the mysteries and power of the Hawaiian system.

Already having a successful shamanic practice in Long Beach, California, he shared the secrets of the Hawaiian system with the circles he has taught at The Path in Redondo Beach for four years. After the enthusiastic feedback and encouragement from the circle members, he decided to share these secrets with a broader audience.

By merging the ancient Hawaiian practices with Core Shamanic techniques, he created a series of weekend workshops on Hawaiian Shamanism. Although he designed them as a series of four workshops, each one can be taken by itself. The series, however, builds in power with a sequence of initiations into his lineage of Hawaiian mystics and healers. This is life-changing and empowering work.

His workshops are exceptionally powerful, inspiring, and contain techniques and tools not found in other classes on Huna. The time has come for this knowledge to spread around the world.

What to Look for in a Teacher

When choosing a teacher of shamanic knowledge and practices, there are several things to consider. Some teachers can only explain principles and pass on information that can be written in a book. Other teachers can demonstrate principles and give exercises that open them up in an experiential manner. A combination of both is preferred.

But the spirit behind any shamanic training does not lie solely in the information being passed. Although a good training seeks to convey knowledge, its real power lies in its contact with the world of spirits and in its ability to pass on that power. All shamanic traditions share the same basic principles. But they differ greatly in the ways they gather that power and in the ways they transmit that power.

A good teacher should be able to not only teach principles but also, by his own power and connections to the spirits, attune his students to higher and higher levels of power. This type of teacher can initiate his students into a stream of power and knowledge that flows down a lineage, from the ancient ones who came before to those in the present.

Larry Kessler is such a teacher.
